Last year, the actress’ husband Scott Mitchell revealed that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014. A few months later, Scott said Barbara now needed round-the-clock care.

In a new interview with Chris Evans, Scott shared an important update on Barbara’s condition.

How is Barbara doing these days?

Speaking to Chris, Scott admitted Barbara has started to lose her former self. He had noticed first changes four years before she got diagnosed, just before she left EastEnders. Over the eight years, these changes have become more profound.

Scott shared:

One of the things that I noticed is that her confidence started going, terribly.

And that affected her in ways such as not knowing what to wear, or she couldn't do her make-up – she always did a brilliant make-up and was always able to turn herself out as Barbara. She just lost confidence.

With the confidence went Barbara’s great sense of fun:

She lost her sense of that fun and that joyful thing that Barbara had.

Scott shudders at the thought of what is about to happen to his beloved wife in the coming years:

I can wind the clock forward years and really frighten myself because I don't know what's going to happen from here to next year.

Nevertheless, he is determined to give her the best care he can possibly give:

I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, to be honest, so my plan is that – Barbara must always feel safe and loved as long as I can humanly make that happen. The rest is most likely way beyond my control.

Despite the effects of her condition, the 81-year-old actress is still able to enjoy what she loves most and dedicated much of her life to – theater.

Earlier this month, she and her husband went to see a matinee performance of West End musical Only Fools and Horses.

Barbara excitedly commented on the show:

It's the best entertainment I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying in ages. I felt such a warmth from the audience. I would give it five stars!
