The terrifying blaze destroyed the building’s 850-year-old Gothic spire and roof but, luckily, the main structure survived.

Many people sent their words of support to France. Emotional messages of solace also came from British royalty.

The royal family stands by the French

Some of the royal family members released rare emotional statements over Notre-Dame’s incident. The Queen shared that she and her husband are “deeply saddened” over what happened and praised the emergency services who tackled the fire.

The statement said:

Prince Philip and I have been deeply saddened to see the images of the fire which has engulfed Notre-Dame Cathedral. I extend my sincere admiration to the emergency services who have risked their lives to try to save this important national monument. My thoughts and prayers are with those who worship at the Cathedral and all of France at this difficult time.

Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla published an emotional message as well, saying they are “utterly heartbroken” over the sad news.

It stated:

My wife and I were utterly heartbroken to learn of the terrible fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral this evening and wanted to let you know immediately how much we are thinking of yourself and the French people at this most agonising of times, and of the emergency services who are so bravely tackling the blaze.

A helping hand

It’s evident that it will take a lot of money to rebuild the destroyed parts of the cathedral. However, it’s been reported that Salma Hayek’s husband, millionaire François-Henri Pinault, has pledged $113 million (€100 million) to help reconstruct it.
