Town In New York Reopens Beaches Shortly After Suspected Shark Attacks On 2 Children

Date July 20, 2018 13:05

Fire Island is currently dealing with a series of possible sharks attacks, which occured near the shores, but the authorities don't seem sure about how to handle the situation properly.

The attacks

Two children, a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, were injured in the waters of the Sailors Haven beach. The boy was boogie boarding when the accident happened. He came out of the water with bite marks on his legs and was taken to a nearby hospital. Luckily, the injuries weren't life-threatening.

The girl, Lola Pollina, was enjoying some time on the beach with her father, who said she was only about 10 feet into the water when the attack happened:

All of a sudden, I saw her panicking, and I saw something…flapping about. She came running out of the water with pretty deep lacerations on her leg.

According to Lola, she saw a “tannish, orangey-looking body and a small fin”. Just like the boy, the 12-year-old is expected to be fine.

News 12 reports that Islip Town fisherman caught 2 sharks in the Atlantic Ocean recently, so the threat is evident.

The beach is still open

Islip Town officials briefly closed their beach, but then made it once again available for visitors shortly after the attacks. However, they are not sure whether to open the Sailors Haven and Watch Hill beaches.

It's very dangerous to go into the water when there's a suspicion of shark presence. As we can see from the footage of Myrtle Beach shore, sharks can swim even in the shallows.
