Extent of damage

According to the BBC scores of flats in the estate were at risk. 50 residents were initially evacuated from the nearby flats, while other homeowners were asked to shut their windows and doors to protect themselves from smoke inhalation.

The evacuated homeowners have since been allowed to return to their houses, and calm has been restored to the estate. A statement from UCC Coffee confirmed that no lives were lost.

Cause of the fire

However, according to an eyewitness, the smoke in the area didn't abate well into the day.

For now, the cause of the outbreak has not been ascertained, but a fire service spokesperson confirmed that a drone would be deployed to check if the blaze has spread. Firefighters are also expected to remain at the scene all day.

How to stay safe in a fire outbreak

In case there's a fire outbreak and you live around the scene or in the building, what should you do to minimize the harm caused?

See a few life-saving tips below:

1. Make sure to alert as many people as possible, and get them out of danger.

2. Do not investigate the fire or try to save valuables. If you are escaping in a group, try to stay together.

3. If your clothes catch fire, don't turn around in panic. This only fans the flames. Lie on the ground and try to smother the fire by rolling on the floor.

Your first point of call should be to stay safe and call the emergency number available in your location as soon as possible. Most importantly, don't try to be a Superman.
