Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money, but for a man without a home, it’s a small fortune. When Elmer Alvarez found an envelope with a $10,000 check in it while walking in downtown New Haven, he decided to do the right thing and return it to its rightful owner. He spotted a phone number on the check and asked a friend to help him make a call.

Alvarez wasn’t thinking of what that sum of money could do for him; instead, he thought of the person who lost it. He said:

I was just thinking about how that person was feeling by losing an amount of a check like that, an amount of money like that. I'd be feeling kind of desperate.

That desperate person was Roberta Hoskie. She didn’t even realize she lost the money until she received a call from Alvarez and his friend.

Hoskie arranged a meeting with Alvarez and decided to document it, so she went on Facebook live. Hoskie commented:

He had no idea who the person was behind the check. He didn't know that I was a single mother. I, at one point, was on welfare. At one point found myself homeless.

When Alvarez gave the check back, he said that seeing Hoskie's reaction was much better than money, and he would definitely repeat his actions should he ever need to.

Seeing her happy, seeing her appreciating it and all that made me feel good.

Hoskie wanted to return the favor, so she wrote him a check and is helping the homeless man to get an apartment. She is also helping him get an education and scheduled a job interview for him with one of her business partners. She said:

There needs to be more people like Elmer Alvarez. He's a golden heart guy. He's a phenomenal guy.

To which Alvarez replied:

I appreciate everything that she's doing for me right now. There's always angels out here in heaven and earth.
