Goodbye, Karl Lagerfeld!
News of Lagerfeld’s demise has rocked the world. The fashion heavyweight known for his signature silver ponytail, dark glasses, and couture gowns worked as creative director for such iconic fashion brands as Chanel and Fendi.
He is said to have passed on in the early hours of Tuesday at 85. This comes after his team successfully evaded rumors of ill health when he failed to make his usual appearances at high profile fashion events, including the Chanel spring/summer show in January.
His rumored long-time lover: Jacques de Bascher
As tributes keep pouring in from colleagues, including Anna Wintour and Karl's adoring fans, a book by French journalist Marie Ottavi on Lagerfeld’s long-time lover reveals some of his most intimate secrets. The designer is said to have opened up to Ottavi because he wanted to set the records straight on the lies that had been written about him over the years.
His rumored lover, handsome de Bascher, was reportedly a proud fellow, who loved talking about his aristocratic heritage. Lagerfeld says they shared a bond beyond physical intimacy.
He was in awe of how well-read de Bascher was, with his sharp tongue and wicked sense of humor. But they never became lovers, he insists:
I infinitely loved that boy but I had no physical contact with him. Of course, I was seduced by his physical charm.
He never had children and loved to be alone
Lagerfeld and de Bascher were together for two decades before he lost his fight with AIDS in 1989, at the age of 38. And the designer stayed by his side till the very end.
Karl Lagerfeld famously loved his personal space and had a very unconventional idea about solitude. He considered it the height of luxury to be alone. He is not known to have had any other lovers or children. Farewell, legend!
