The family has confirmed news of Venita's passing. They did not reveal the cause of death but acknowledged that she died on Thanksgiving Day.

The overwhelming display of love

Online, the reactions have been genuinely overwhelming.

And Oprah has since released a statement both confirming the news and thanking everyone for the support she has received.

She said,

Thank you all for your kind words and condolences regarding my mother Vernita Lee’s passing. It gives our family great comfort knowing she lived a good life and is now at Peace.

This was definitely a sober Thanksgiving for the family.

She was proud of her daughter

Despite the fact that Oprah and her mom had a rocky relationship during the early years, Vernita was very proud of her daughter.

In her home in Milwaukee, she kept photos of the media mogul and her achievements. But Oprah was not her only child. She had a son Jeffrey whom she lost to AIDS in 1989. And in 2003, she lost her daughter, Patricia Lee Lloyd. She leaves behind two children and many grandchildren. Our prayers are with them.
