Michelle Obama On Ignoring Royal Protocol With The Queen: “That Was Absolutely The Right Thing To Do"

Date April 15, 2019 17:09

When the former First Lady met the Queen of England in 2009, she unleashed her touchy-feely side and did the most unthinkable thing ever - she gave the monarch a hug.

Now, while it might seem normal for the American population, touching the Queen is a big no-no and quite a massive violation of the royal protocol.

Despite that, the meeting of the rulers of the two countries seemed to go well and surely the two ladies have warm memories of each other. However, Obama doesn’t think that she did the wrong thing when she hugged the Queen.

It was the right thing to do

During her book tour in London, Michelle Obama has addressed the moment that raised many eyebrows at Buckingham Palace and around the world.

Hugging the Queen? That’s a bold move, to say the least. But the former First Lady believes she did nothing wrong and acted as any “human” would.

She said:

What is true among world leaders is that there are people who handle protocol, and usually the people they’re representing don’t want all that protocol. But it’s just the way things are. So I don’t know that I could have done anything differently because it was a natural human reaction.

Obama continued by saying that she did it because she felt it was “the right thing to do”:

That was absolutely the right thing to do, because it was the human thing to do.

Her Majesty, apparently, also doesn’t favor some protocol rules and is not afraid to break them. In the book, titled Becoming, Michelle shared that the monarch even said to her that she considers the protocol “rubbish.”

But what do you think? Was it really a big mistake to hug the Queen or did it help the two women to bond?
