Berkley city's legislators voted to ban gender-specific words in its city code and replace them with gender-neutral options. So soon, there will be no more policeman or policewoman in the city of Berkeley, California. There will also be no chairmen, no manpower, no manhole.

For instance, "Manpower" will be referred to as "human effort," and "man-made" objects will be described with terms like "human-made," "artificial," "manufactured," "machine-made" or "synthetic."

According to CNN gender-specific references to job titles, like "policeman" and "craftsmen," will also be changed in the code, to "police officer" and "craftspeople" or "artisans."

"Sorority" and "fraternity" would change to "collegiate Greek system residence." And the use of gendered pronouns, like "he" and "she," would be replaced with specific titles, like "the attorney" or "the candidate."

The council member Rigel Robinson, who introduced an ordinance explained:

"In recent years, broadening societal awareness of transgender and gendernonconforming identities has brought to light the importance of non-binary gender inclusivity,"

Well, the truth is that there is power in language and there are people who can not find the right words to define themselves or feel uncomfortable about the current gender-specific words. Should not we all crave for mutual understanding and ultimate respect for each other?
