Iranians are rallying to show their support after a teenage girl was arrested for posting videos of herself dancing on Instagram.

Maedeh Hojabri's arrest

Maedeh is an Iranian teenager who has garnered thousands of followers on her Instagram page. She often posts videos of herself dancing to different types of music.

This is, however, not acceptable in that region. As a result, the girl was arrested following a TV broadcast of her 'confession'. The young dancer also broke the laws by choosing to dance without wearing the mandatory headscarf.

In the original report obtained by AP, the 18-year-old gymnast admitted breaking the law but said that she only did it to gain more followers. It was not clear if she made this statement under duress.

Iranian women fight for her

Following the announcement of Maedeh's arrest, many women have taken to social media to express their anger over putting the young girl behind bars.

Some ladies even posted their own dancing videos, daring the authorities to come for them.

A blogger named Hossein Ronaghi commented on Twitter:

If you tell people anywhere in the world that 17 and 18-year-old girls are arrested for their dance, happiness and beauty on charges of spreading indecency, while child rapists and others are free, they will laugh! Because for them, it's unbelievable!

Men also showed their support

It was not just women who found Maedeh's arrest abhorrent. A few men have also joined the social media movement by sharing their disagreement.

The overall reaction of Iranians to this matter was one of disapproval. Many called for a change to be made in the country's laws.
