Oh No! Peter Mayhew Best Known As Chewbacca In ‘Star Wars’ Dies At Age 74

The Star Wars films have lost another star. Peter Mayhew, best known for his role as the beloved Chewbacca in the franchise, sadly passed away on Tuesday at the age of 74.

Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca

Born Peter William Mayhew in 1944, the actor played the iconic character Chewbacca the furry sidekick to Han Solo in five Star Wars films.

He played the furry Wookiee from the original in 1977 to the recent The Force Awakens in 2015 before retiring from the role due to health issues.

The 74-year-old portrayed the role in 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special and made an appearance on The Muppet Show in 1980. Mayhew also played Chewbacca in commercials and made hospital appearances for sick children outside the franchise. 

In 1997, he was honored at the MTV Film Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award .

Chewy is gone!

The 7-foot-3 actor, who was born in Richmond-on-Thames, London, died peacefully at his home in Texas on Tuesday after he suffered a heart attack. He was surrounded by his loved ones.

On Thursday, Mayhew's family confirmed the actor's death on Twitter saying: 

He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home.

Mayhew's death is coming days before Star Wars Day, which is May 4. The English-American actor is the third from the original cast of the movie to die. Carrie Fisher and actor Kenny Baker both died in 2016.
