He was named the second greatest NASCAR Modified driver of all-time in 2003 and has been nominated six times to be on the NASCAR hall of fame

He also held the Whelen Modified Tour record with 74 total victories between 1985 and 2014.

Gone too soon

As reported by PEOPLE, Stefanik passed away on Sunday after suffering injuries in a fatal plane crash.

The Connecticut State Police revealed that the Aerolite 103, single-engine, single-seat ultralight aircraft that the racer boarded crashed into a wooded area adjacent to the Riconn Airport in Rhode Island.

Stefanik suffered multiple injuries and burns and was airlifted from the crash site; he passed away in the hospital.

NASCAR confirmed the sad news with a statement that praised the Stefanik for his contribution to the racing world. NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France said:

“Mike Stefanik was one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history, but even more so, he was a true representative of our sport. His tough, competitive nature and excellence on the race track won him the respect and admiration of fans and competitors alike.”

Mike passed away at the age of 61 and was survived by his wife Julie and extended family.

Many of Stefanik’s colleagues and fans have paid their respects to the late car racer.
