Late President Ronald Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis addressed recently uncovered remarks in which her father referred to Africans delegates as “monkeys.” She, in fact, has asked for forgiveness for her father's racist remarks.

Patti Davis, 66, said in an opinion piece published Thursday in The Washington Post she "wasn't prepared for the tape of my father using the world 'monkeys' to describe black African delegates to the United Nations who had voted in a way that angered him."

Moreover, she admitted there is “no defense, no rationalization, no suitable explanation” for what Reagan said, she thinks he would ask forgiveness for the comments if he were alive now.

Davis also wrote:

“I don’t know if it was masochism or shock, but I listened to the tape twice before allowing myself to cry.

In the tape, Reagan, who was then the governor of California, can be heard expressing his frustration to Nixon over the United Nations voting to recognize the People’s Republic of China with the help of delegates from African countries.

“To see those, those monkeys from those African countries — damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!”

- Reagan told Nixon to laughter.

Davis went on to say that she never heard her father make remarks like those recorded in the tape. The woman seems to be sad and a bit disappointed about her father's words.

We do also believe that the former US President would apologize for what's been said.
