Believe it or not, it was 42 years ago when the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Aron Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977, of a heart ailment. He was 42.

Elvis Presley's death

Why was the swivel-hipped singer, known for songs such as "Jailhouse Rock," "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Love Me Tender," taken at such a young age?

Although Presley sold millions of records and sold-out concerts to screaming fans, he, in fact, was a deeply troubled man behind the scenes.

Though Elvis's actual cause of death appears to have been heart failure, the cardiac incident is now considered to be a result of the rock star's longstanding and serious drug abuse.

Overweight, bloated, and wracked by the effects of opiate addiction, Elvis was found by his girlfriend, Ginger Alden, lying unconscious on the floor of the master suite bathroom.

Presley's drug addiction

Presley's bodyguard for 16 years, said:

"He was on pills all day long, and he would give himself shots in the rear end. We prayed for this man many times. His drug habit is so severe that I'm convinced he is in danger of losing his life."

Moreover, Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla has claimed the King knowingly took his own life when he died from a drug-related heart attack.

While promoting the documentary, “Elvis Presley: The Searcher" the 72-year-old Priscilla said:

"He knew what he was doing.”

Likewise, Priscilla said she and loved ones had failed to try to wean him off drugs but his determination was strong and influence was overpowering:

"...people go, 'why didn't anyone do anything?' Well, that's not true. People there in the inner group did - but you did not tell Elvis what to do. You'd have been out of there faster than a scratched cat. They would try and - no way."

It seems that Elvis really intended to take his own life by swallowing huge overdoses of prescription painkillers.

He wanted to have a long rest and he eventually got it. After all, whatever the reason for his death was, now it doesn't really matter as long as we can't bring him back. Hopefully, he found peace in the place where he is now.
