The First Royal In A Same-Sex Marriage Lord Ivar Mountbatten Never Knew If The Royal Family Approved: “They Don't Communicate Very Well”

Date September 3, 2019

Lord Ivar Mountbatten is not a name you hear quite often, but the royal is one that has broken records in the British royal family.

Lord Ivar is Queen Elizabeth's cousin third cousins who made history in 2018 as the first royal to ever come out openly as gay. He is also the first to get married in a same-sex royal wedding.

Ivar tied the knot to James Coyle in an intimate ceremony on September 22, 2018.

Their wedding wasn't attended by any member of the extended royal family. However, the Earl and Countess of Wessex did well to send their wishes.

They don't talk about it!

During a sit down with Tatler Magazine, the 56-year-old dished about how his family members reacted to his coming out. He explained that surprisingly, much fuss wasn't created about his sexual orientation.

Unlike what would have been chaotic about ten years ago, Ivar believed that the reason why things were easy was because of the younger generation of royals like William and Harry.

He disclosed that when William mentioned that he would support his kids if they were gay, it helped change the perception of people towards people of the LGBTQ+ community.

However, the older generation of royals did no such thing. They gave no assurance or disapproval about his relationship with Coyle. When asked if his decision to come out worked out well for the royal family, Ivar said:

"Well, you would hope so! But then they don't really talk about it. I mean, the royals, they don't communicate very well."

Ivar has three daughters from his previous marriage

Ivar was previously married to Penelope Anne Vere Thompson for 17 years, and their union was blessed with three beautiful girls. Their names are Ella Louise Georgina, Alexandra Alix Nada Victoria, and Louise Luli Xenia Rose.

They were all present at his second wedding to Coyle.

It is lovely that Ivar went for what he wanted regardless of what the royal family might have said. Hopefully, his confession helps them communicate better.
