The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are revealing quite a bit on the 2019 documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.

The ITV documentary gives viewers behind-the-scenes look at their Africa tour. In addition, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also opened up about some of their personal feelings and experiences.

The reality of royal motherhood

While speaking with the host of the documentary Tom Bradby, Meghan said that life as a royal hasn't been exactly perfect. She explained that her expectations of what being a royal would be like and the reality are completely different.

She added that from the outside, things might look a certain way, but what she has been going through is nothing compared to what most people may believe. She said:

You have no idea. It’s really hard to understand what it’s like. I know what it seems like it should be, but it’s a very different thing.

The Duchess also admitted that the tried to do and be what the British expect but it didn't come naturally to her.

I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a ‘stiff upper lip.’ I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.

She further added that while she never imagined being a royal would be a walk in the park, she didn't think it would be this much of a struggle. The duchess was referring to the things people have said and written about her.

I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair. And that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile. If things were fair … If I’d done something wrong, I’d be the first one to go ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. I would never do that.’ But when people are saying things that are just untrue and they are being told they’re untrue but they’re allowed to still say them — I don’t know anybody in the world who would feel like that’s okay.

She went on to clarify that it isn't just about the public scrutiny but more about the types of things that are being said about her, most of which she alleged to be untrue.

Is Meghan Markle feeling okay

While being interviewed, Meghan Markle gave an insight into how she's doing and it turns out she's not exactly peachy. She opened up about being a wife and mom in the public eye saying that women are vulnerable when pregnant and "it's a lot."

So, you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed.

She confirmed that her experience has been a struggle and also agreed that she's not really okay.

Being a Meghan Markle hater seems to be the trendy thing in certain circles but the duchess' revelations show that when people say mean things, they are actually hurting a real person.

It can't have been easy for the Duchess of Sussex to share this vulnerable side of her on such a large platform but hopefully, people realize she's hurting and learn to be kinder.
