Duchess Camilla May Snub The 'Queen' Title When Prince Charles Becomes King, But He Will Pressure Her To Take The Role, Expert Says

Date October 28, 2019

Royal followers understand the concept that Prince Charles is the heir to the British throne. And as it turns out, when the time comes, he will be the oldest King to be crowned.

Prince Charles is already in his 70s and is still an heir apparent to the throne. Interestingly, his mother, Queen Elizabeth, was only 25 when she was given the crown after her father King George VI passed away.

Before Prince Charles, the oldest monarch in the British royal history to begin his reign was William IV who took the throne at age 64.

Many rules govern the decision of who will take the crown and when. But in general, we know the first child is usually the next in line. And when the time comes for Prince Charles, he may have to make some tough decisions.

Will Camilla Parker Bowles become Queen?

Duchess Camilla has been Prince Charles' wife since 2005 and it seems very likely that she will be right by his side when he ascends the throne. However, royal biographer Penny Junor believes Camilla "dreads" this time.

In her 2017 book The Duchess, Penny wrote that while Charles may insist that his wife becomes Queen when he takes the throne, Camilla may not be comfortable with the title.

Charles will try and press for her to be crowned Queen... We have no known basis of the wife of the King not being crowned Queen.

According to Penny, Charles is very proud of Camilla and appreciates her for being there for him, so much so that regardless of public opinion, he will insist that his wife gets the full title. However, the Duchess is hesitant.

The whole business of his accession is something she dreads and, in her inimitable way, is choosing not to think about.

Officially, Duchess Camilla will be known as HRH The Princess Consort when Charles becomes king. But it is completely his decision to bestow upon his wife the 'Queen' title if he chooses to.

Public opinion

Of course, people have their respective opinions about whether or not Duchess Camilla should one day become Queen Camilla.

In fact, according to one poll carried out by the Daily Express, 63% of people felt like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are more fitting for the role of King and Queen respectively while heir apparent Prince Charles and his wife Camilla only received 18% of the votes,

Duchess Camilla may not be the most popular member of the royal family, but people can agree that she has shown nothing but love and support for her husband since they got married. It's understandable that Charles will want everyone to accept and recognize his wife. But in the end, only time will tell how things will play out.
