Meghan Markle Still Can't Get Rid Off Her 'Immigrant' Status As She's Yet To Become A UK Citizen After Over 2 Years, Reports Say

Date November 18, 2019

Meghan Markle's citizenship is the topic of a heated discussion among royal fans. Many wonder whether the Duchess has already become a British citizen and renounced her American roots.

It's been over 2 years since Markle got engaged to Prince Harry and started the process of acquiring her UK citizenship, but seems like things are going slower than expected.

Is Meghan Markle a British citizen?

Upon her engagement with the Queen's grandson, Meghan Markle applied for a UK citizenship on the rights of a British citizen's spouse. The usual process for that kind of application can take up to three years, but being a member of the royal family certainly must have some perks, right? Wrong.

According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex is still waiting on her citizenship despite being married to Prince Harry and giving birth to the most recent member of the royal family. Meghan's friend told Daily Mail:

Meghan is not yet a British citizen. It might seem extraordinary, given that she's been married to the Queen's grandson for 18 months, but she accepts that it's a slow process.

The Palace also addressed the situation and confirmed that they will not be seeking special treatment for Meghan Markle and everyone is prepared to wait along with the rest of the public.

We have no doubt that the Duchess will become a citizen soon enough, but for now, we wait.
