Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson always seemed like close friends and could always rely on each other within the royal family. However, one story suggests Diana wasn't as genuine with Fergie as we might've thought.

Did Princess Diana leak Fergie and Andrew's marital problems to the press?

Back in 1992, when the news of Sarah Ferguson's infidelity hit the press, Princess Diana was struggling with her own possible PR disaster and was desperate to avoid it by any means necessary.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton collaborated with the Princess at the time, but they learnt that a rival book was scheduled to be released weeks before their own.

Morton revealed in a documentary Royals at War that he turned to Diana and said they needed something strong to distract the media. That's when she revealed that Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew decided to divorce, a fact that was hidden by the Palace.

According to the author, Diana said:

Well, Sarah and Andrew have just been to Sandringham to see the Queen to talk about a separation.

Mr Morton continued:

I said, ‘Well, thats a fact’. So I wrote a story about it, which duly appeared on the front pages. Pretty ruthless stuff.

Royal author Tina Brown supported Morton's story in her 2007 book The Diana Chronicles.

The Queen was personally infuriated by the leak.

Brown added that The Palace was “convinced the Duchess had handed out the information herself” and even started “accusing her of hiring a PR company” to hand over the information to the press.

Tina Brown also said that Diana used Fergie many times before to avoid scandals, and looks like it often worked really well:

I remember Diana was going to be offered a new car, and she said ‘I’ll let Sarah try that out first so I can see what the reaction would be’. So she almost used Sarah as a bit of a yellow canary, and if things went wrong she would step away from the situation and poor Sarah would get all the bad publicity.

Still, Fergie never believed that it was Princess Diana who leaked the news about her separation from Prince Andrew and to this day insists that they were good friends.
