Eleanor Rosalynn Carter was First Lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981, but more than just bearing a title, she was quite active politically. During her time in the White House, she was one of President Jimmy Carter’s closest advisers.
Ever modest and graceful, she committed herself to support her husband while he was in office. At the start of his presidency, she made it quite clear that she was not going to be anything close to a traditional First Lady and she meant it.
For starters, the gown she wore to the inaugural ball was the same dress she wore six years earlier when her husband became governor of Atlanta. She also committed her energies to several causes with mental health being top of the list.
In February this year, the former First Lady went through surgery at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to remove “troubling scar tissue” from a portion of her small intestine. The procedure lasted for several hours and was a success.
However, the ordeal was far from pleasant for the former President. Speaking at a free Presidents Day event at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, he said that doctors gave dire predictions of survival and he was very sad. But he held on to hope for the sake of his darling wife.
I was deathly afraid. I prayed for three hours. Finally, the doctor came in about 5 o’clock on Sunday morning and told me she was gonna be OK.
Thankfully, she survived the operation and made a full recovery. President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Smith got married in 1946 and have been together for 72 years. Carter revealed that the secret to having a long marriage is first picking the right person.
He also adds that learning how to give each other space helps. Understanding that people are different and finding ways to encourage each other and providing support will make a relationship healthy. It is comforting to know the worst is over and we wish the couple good health.
