Empire's Star Jussie Smollett Opens Up About What It Is Like To Be A Black Gay Man In The Showbiz
If you are a fan of a hit music drama TV series Empire, you probably know who Jussie Smollett is. The 36-year-old plays musician Jamal Lyon; he appeared in a handful of films and commercials; and he’s also a wonderful director and musician.
On top of it, Jussie is a great friend who’s on good terms with the Empire’s crew and cast members. When asked about Smollett, they say he’s one of the most open and communicative directors they have ever worked with.
But what is even more important, he’s a black gay man who’s not afraid of talking about it.
Changing the Hollywood
On Empire, Jussie’s character is also a black gay. But unlike Jamal, Smollett has never been handed a silver spoon. Instead, he had to work hard to make the ends meet and be accepted.
Of course, he worried he would have to hide behind the camera because of being homosexual. But luckily, he’s now a prime example that everyone can achieve success, no matter what your sexuality, race, or background is.
On his sexuality and violence against people of color
With more and more success he gained, Jussie wondered if he could talk about his sexual orientation and if he could use his fame to advocate equality and justice. As for his sexuality, Smollett never wanted to tell the world about it:
The second you say something, they want that to be your storyline forever.
But now, he’s finally ready to be more specific, understanding the importance of motivating other people not to think that loving someone can be wrong:
If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open – not to gender, but to love.
Besides, Smollett is not afraid of talking about what is going in the world, including the Black Lives Matter movement. Even though he was told not to do it in because he might lose his career, he couldn’t turn a blind eye.
Given all this, it’s no wonder people love this man
