Many people have difficult relationships with their parents. Actually, the relationship between parents and children is something that accounts for the majority of therapy sessions across the world. Patrick Swayze was one of them as the late actor had a troubled childhood.

Patsy Swayze's mother

In 2013, it was reported that Patrick Swayze's mother, Patsy, passed away at the age of 86.

She had a strong influence on who Patrick became. For one thing, she taught dance at the University of Houston and also founded the Houston Jazz Ballet Company. Her son and four other children were part of the students there.

In addition, Patrick Swayze met his wife Lisa Niemi because she too was one of his mom's students.

Years after the actor's death, Lisa Niemi is opening up about what Patrick's childhood was like.

In an interview with People, she celebrated her late husband and praised his "lovingness and kindness."

Also, in a documentary on Paramount Network titled 'I Am Patrick Swayze', Lisa said that Patrick Swayze's mother had a strong demand for perfectionism that often veered into physical abuse.

Patsy Swayze "was really an example of what happens in families in a cycle of abuse," Lisa said in the film. She added:

She could be very violent, but it was nothing compared to what she endured growing up and the stories I heard about what she went through with her own mother.

Patrick's widow also shared a story of how, on his 18th birthday, Patsy was "laying into" her son and it took his father to step in. His dad threatened that he would divorce Patsy if she touched Patrick again.

She never hit him after that.

Lisa stated that Patrick realized the positive and negative aspects of how he was raised after he moved out. It made him work and fight harder, she said.

The relationship between Patsy and her son got smoother as the years went by. And Lisa said that, despite their complicated history.

Niemi told People:

I think she would say, ‘Well, you know, sometimes I could be strict, I’m that kind of a teacher.’ She was a complicated woman, intense and an amazing life force. Patrick absolutely loved and respected her.

Although she was critical and negative, she soon realized that she needed to be nicer if she wanted to be in her son's life.
