Brain tumors may begin in the brain, but sometimes cancer can start in other organs and then spread to the brain. This form of tumors is called metastatic or secondary. The most common cancers such as colon cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, melanoma, lung cancer can metastasize to the brain.

Secondary brain tumors typically develop in people who already have oncological diseases. Primary brain tumors can start in the brain itself or the tissues around it such as meninges, cranial nerves or pineal gland.

Symptoms of brain tumors may be different. They can vary widely according to the location and the type of tumor. Different parts of the brain are responsible for different functions of the body, so the signs can be very subtle.

Risk factors

Researchers don’t know why brain tumors grow if we are talking about people with primary brain tumors. At the same time, several factors can increase the risk of brain tumors. They include the following:

  1. Age. The risk of brain tumors changes when you are getting older. According to doctors, brain tumors are more common in older adults but they can affect a person of any age. Several types of brain tumors develop almost always in children.
  2. Radiation. People who have been exposed to radiation have a higher risk of developing brain tumors.
  3. Family history. Heredity may also play a role, as brain tumors may develop in a person whose relatives have this condition.
