The funeral originally supposed to be private, however, then-Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prince Charles convinced the Queen that it should be a public affair.

In September 1997, the world watched an utterly heart wrecking moment when Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their mother’s coffin. The boys were with their father, Prince Charles, and their uncle, Earl Spencer. However, Prince Philip was also with heartbroken Diana's sons. Nobody expected to see him there.

A royal author, Ingrid Seward, wrote in her book, My Husband And I: The Inside Story of the Royal Marriage, that initially Earl Spencer thought he should be the only one to walk behind his sister’s coffin.

However, Prince Charles wished to pay respect to his ex-wife and walk with his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Prince William wasn't sure that he wanted to walk:

At first William flatly refused. Charles pleaded with him and said that it would be utterly wrong of him not to accompany them.

Prince Philip offered to walk beside William, and he agreed.

Despite the fact that Prince Philip and Princess Diana disliked each other, William had always been very close to his grandpa, so he wanted him to be by his side at what he called "one of the hardest things" he'd ever had to do.

Diana's coffin was carried from Kensington Palace to St James's Palace where she was taken at the Spencer estate in Althorp, her childhood home.
