'I'm Incredibly Blessed': Ted Danson On How He And Mary Steenburgen Have Kept Their Marriage Strong For Over 2 Decades
Even though being in a marriage for 22 years is deemed a great achievement. By Hollywood standards, it is next to impossible. However, this cute couple proves that there are no limits when it comes to real love.
Actors Ted Danson, 69, and Mary Steenburgen, 64, have indeed been happily married for 22 years, and their relationship is just as strong as ever.
Years before they actually met, Mary was admiring Ted’s talent while watching Cheers, where he was starring. Recently, she has told Fox News,
I always thought Ted was brilliant. When I was going through sad times, I'd watch Cheers at the end of the day to make me feel better.
Mary and Ted finally met in 1993 during the production of the film Pontiac Moon. Ted was going through a rough patch with his divorce and the end of Cheers after 11 seasons. The actor has recently talked about this stage of his life, saying,
I was a mess-and-a-half. I thought, I'm incapable of being in a relationship. But I was working on myself. Ironic how life works in those moments. Once you throw your arms up and surrender, a lot of times things come your way.
At that time, Mary was a single mom and experienced difficult times. But as it turned out, the two of them gave each other all the love and support that they desperately needed.
Two years later, in 1995, they got married. The actors built successful acting careers, participating in numerous movies and shows, but amazingly, they never let anything overshadow their relationship.
When Ted was asked to reveal the secret to their happy and lasting relationship, the answer melt everyone’s heart – "it’s all Mary". He told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb in September,
I'm married to Mary Steenburgen.
And after all those years, they are still crazy about each other. Ted says, he loves the “way Mary laughs and smiles" and “her willingness to say yes to leap off tall buildings of life”. He went on,
I love her sense of fairness and right and wrong. And I don't think you're supposed to say this when you're almost 70, but she's very sexy.
To tell the truth, their fans experienced a shock after Danson’s recent announcement on Curb Your Enthusiasm that the couple had been separated for three months. In the show, Ted and Mary play fictionalized versions of themselves; therefore, even their friends were a little concerned. So, the couple had to dismiss the speculations by issuing a publicist’s statement, saying,
The show is fictitious and it is just a make-believe storyline.
The actor says that he is looking forward to spending more time with his beloved wife after the end of the filming of the current season of NBC's The Good Place. Ted told Us Weekly,
I'm madly in love with Mary. She's a remarkable human being so I'm just incredibly blessed. If I were to die, I can say, I know what it's like to be loved and to love.
