And it was not until she turned 21 that Katie learned a very important news – on the other side of the planet, in China, her birth-parents are desperately waiting for her to come and see them.

It was a hard decision

Back in 1995, Katie's biological parents, Xu Lida and Qian Fenxiang, had no other choice but to abandon their newborn baby girl. They already had one daughter and because of China's one-child policy and the severe consequences of breaking the law, they could not afford to keep the second.

Katie was born on a boat, where her parents were hiding from their neighbors and city officials. Three days later, her father prepared a bottle of milk for her, kissed her gently, and left her in the market, hoping he would get a chance to see her again in the future.

Years later, the man would confess that the last memory of his younger daughter was the sound of her cry when people discovered her.

Small note lead to their reunion

When the girl was 21, she learned out about the note her birth-parents left with her on that market.

In the letter, her biological father explained why they had to abandon her and asked adopted parents to let them meet again on the Broken Bridge in Hangzhou – a popular place for reunions – in 10 or 20 years.

When Katie learned about the note, she decided to fly to China and see her birth-parents. They met on the said bridge – along with her biological mom and dad, Katie's elder sister, Xiaochen, was also there.

Over the next few days, the reunited family enjoyed spending time together and getting to know each other a bit better.

Then, Katie flew back home to Michigan, but she plans to stay in touch with her birth-parents and sister. She is currently working on her Mandarin, so that one day, they would be able to understand each other without the help of a translator.
