Restaurant Owner Pretends To Be A Homeless To See How The Waiters Will Treat Him

We live our lives supposing things are as they appear to be when that is almost never the case. ― Richelle E. Goodrich

No matter how diverse our world is today, we should still learn an important lesson of treating everybody with decency, regardless of who they are. We shouldn't discriminate or ignore people because of their appearance or the situations they've had to go through.

And this we can learn from the example of this waitress. One day, a homeless man entered the restaurant she worked at.

Needless to say, nobody wanted to serve him, and both fellow customers as well as employees were bothered by him. But not the waitress.

The woman came to her customer with a big smile and as if he were just a regular guest. She accepted his order, but the manager warned the waitress she'd have to pay for the tramp if he woudn't be able to pay for his order. Yet, she wouldn't listen and would give him a high-quality service. And how big everyone's surprise was when the man left after paying for his meal and when the waitress found her tip -  $100 - and a note saying:

Dear Maria, I respect you very much and can see that you respect yourself … It is evident in the way you treat others, you have found the secret of happiness, your kind gestures will guide and others who know you.

As it turned out, the "homeless" man was actually the owner of the restaurant who wanted to test his employees and find the best ones. And he did found her, and later he rewarded her with promoting to manager.

As long as we continue to live as if we are what we do, what we have, and what other people think about us, we will remain filled with judgments, opinions, evaluations, and condemnations. We will remain addicted to putting people and things in their "right" place. ― Henri J.M. Nouwen

Respect, kindness, and love to each other, this is what makes us human. So we should always remember to treat each other equally and the way we would like others to treat us. And in the end, we will all be pleasantly rewarded.
