Sleeping Position That Doctors Recommend Avoiding

Lifestyle & Health

Getting enough sleep plays a huge role in our physical and mental health, especially given the fact that we spend one-third of our lives asleep. Specialists say that we should get at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily. However, few people follow these recommendations.

As well as the duration and continuity of a night's rest, the position in which we fall asleep is also crucial for our well-being.

According to Hooman Melamed, an orthopedic spine surgeon from Los Angeles, California, at some point in their lives, eighty percent of our population will have spine problems caused by the way they sleep.

Moreover, our sleeping position can cause back and neck pain, stomach troubles and even premature aging.

Which body position do specialists consider the most dangerous for health?

Specialists claim that if a person sleeps on their back with their hands stretched above them, they risk harming their neck and shoulder nerves. Although this position is not among the most popular, 50 people out of every 1,000 prefer precisely this sleeping position.

Furthermore, doctors do not recommend sleeping on the stomach, as this position violates the natural curve of the spine which, in its turn, leads to increased pressure on muscles and joints and can cause numbness and pain.

Also, specialists advise avoiding sleeping in an embryo position. This pose can become a cause of pain in the neck and spine, premature wrinkles and sagging breasts. It's extremely important for the neck and shoulders to be in the right position during sleep.

Which pose do doctors consider optimal?

Sleeping on the back with your arms stretched along your body is the ideal option for the body's health. This pose helps maintain the spine and the neck in the natural position. Additionally, it helps to prevent acid reflux and the appearance of early wrinkles and stretch marks. However, for this position of sleeping, it's recommended not to use too many pillows, as they can cause pain.

As mentioned above, one of the main conditions for our well-being is a good night's sleep. Therefore, we highly recommend you get enough rest and do your best to sleep in the right position.
