Hyon Song Wol: Who Is Kim Jong-Un's Rumored Ex-Lover?
The DPRK is a country of mysteries and contrasts. On the one hand, it is a typical communist, utopian country; on the other hand, even people in the 1930s USSR couldn't have imagined there would exist somewhere with such extreme rules. While this is pure politics, there exists another world - the world of feelings. And feelings can touch even the cruel heart of Kim Jong-un, the head of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Of course, in the DPRK, you can't expect to find the kind of pop-music we are used to. But this doesn't mean there are no singers. For example, in 2012 by the decree of Kim Jong-un, the vocal ensemble "Moranbong" was created. The band consisted of five main vocalists and eleven instrumentalists. The formation of the ensemble followed the frenzied popularity of the South Korean singer PSY.
Who were the vocalists?
Hyun Song Wol became the leader of the band. The music style of Moranbong was undoubtedly approved by the party. However, this does not mean that the singers were completely forbidden from wearing dresses with sparkles. The band is very popular is in North Korea. Moreover, it is considered to be a kind of progress symbol. The girls don't sing about unhappy love, suffering, or loneliness. Their songs are about labor, patriotism, and the ordinary joys of everyday life.
But according to the press, Hyon Song Wol was not appointed lead vocalist by accident. Rumor has it that in the early 2000s, the young Kim Jong-un went to a concert of Hyon's and fell in love with her. His affection was so great that he didn't even care that the young girl already had a boyfriend. Kim managed to convince the girl to go out with him on a date.
Kim's father disapproved of their relationship.
Kim Jong-il, the father of the current leader of North Korea, was against the relationship between his son and the young singer and for a time, Hyun Song Wol disappeared from the public view. Some foreign media companies were sure the young girl had been executed. Others believed she got married to a high-ranking officer and gave birth to a child. But in 2012, she appeared on screen again at a state concert, Hyon turned up with a rounded belly.
Kim Jong-un himself married another woman. Interestingly, the First Lady of North Korea, Ri Sol-ju, is a singer too. There is very little information about the wife of the North Korean leader. Even less than about his ex-lover. However, rumors and gossip about the latter seem to trouble Kim Jong-un once in a while. Because of rumors about Hyon, Moranbong's tour to China was once even canceled!
He still remembers the past.
Today 30-year-old Hyon Song Wol is not only a vocalist in Moranbong and the leader of the Samdziyon band, but also a senior colonel in the Korean People's Army. All the members of her group have military ranks (the girls often perform in military uniforms), but the highest one belongs to the ex-lover of Kim Jong-un.
Moreover, after rumors of the alleged execution of Kim Jong-un's ex-lover, she even led the North Korean Olympic delegation to South Korea to compete under a united flag at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
All the evidence suggests that ''nobody is forgotten, and nothing is forgotten''. Perhaps, the North Korean head still keeps his old feelings in his heart.
By the way, Moranbong's songs are very similar to the Soviet songs of the 1970-80s, don't you think?
