Have you noticed that your dog treats some people with suspicion but is friendly to others? The fact is that they read people’s emotions better than us. Dogs are not just very intelligent animals, they are also sensitive. Recent studies prove that dogs can recognize a person’s emotions by facial expression, and can tell if a person is trustworthy.

Led by Akiko Takaoka of Kyoto University, an experiment was conducted, designed to check whether a dog would trust a person who had previously lied to it. The experiment included 34 dogs with their owners.

At the first stage, the four-legged subjects were pointed to containers with food hidden inside. At the next stage, the experimenters pointed to containers that turned out to be empty. This proved that dogs understand human gestures, but the result of the third stage was more fascinating. At the third stage, the dogs were shown containers again with food inside, but none of the 34 pets approached them. From which we can conclude that dogs can recognize a lie and react with distrust.

Recent studies have also shown that dogs are able to understand communication between a stranger and its owner. So, in one experiment, the dogs’ owners turned to strangers for help. When strangers assisted the owner, the dogs understood the social rules. However, animals avoided people who were aggressive towards their owners.

Everyone knows about the strong sense of smell of a service dog, but the ability to sense emotions also helps to identify criminals. For example, in the US state of Washington, Rex saved two teenagers from robbers that nearly cost him his life. And in Seville, Spain, they still remember a case that occurred in the 19th century – s dog helped to solve the murder of its own owner, who was shot by his godson on a hunting trip.
