Richest Man On Earth Refused To Pay Ransom For His Own Grandson

Date April 25, 2019

Here’s a question worth musing about – does a person become rich because of saving on everything or because the charitable generosity returns a hundredfold? We think that each case deserves to be taken separately, and so, we would like to discuss one billionaire who remained frugal even in the face of mortal danger to his grandson.

Jean Paul Getty was considered one of the wealthiest people in the world in the middle of the 20th century and in 1966 was listed as the world’s richest private citizen in the Guinness Book of Records. He made his own fortune continuing the family business. Jean’s parents raised him in strictness and weren’t eager to share money with him. He had to rely only on himself.

It is exactly the same detachment and distrust that Jean Paul Getty showed towards his own children and grandchildren. He was married 5 times and had 5 sons. The billionaire didn’t attend his one son’s funeral because he was too busy. He also refused to pay ransom to the kidnappers of one of his 14 grandchildren until they resorted to violence. The rich man also went to court with his youngest son who demanded financial support for himself and his stepbrothers.

None of his relatives has ever been to his huge estate Sutton Place in the UK. Getty used to live there surrounded by strangers who didn’t have any claims to his fortune. Over the years, his reputation as a miser was firmly established when he started skimping on stationery, socks, heating, taxes, telephone calls, and entertainment.

His frugality reached its peak when Jean Paul Getty’s will was announced – the billions went to a museum in the city of Malibu. His close ones and loyal servants received pennies. The richest and stingiest man died alone at the age of 83.

We were shocked by the story of Jean Paul Getty’s frugality, and particularly the kidnapping of his grandson! By the way, there is a film entitled All the Money in the World based on this episode. Have you heard of it?
