How Much Will Princess Eugenie’s Wedding Set Back People Of Britain?

Date August 23, 2018

The royal family must find 2018 quite eventful. After the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, little Louis’s birth and christening, the British are anticipating yet another festive occasion – Princess Eugenie’s wedding, set for October, 12.

In January of 2018, one of Elizabeth II's granddaughters said “yes” to her sweetheart Jack Brooksbank, the manager of prestigious and once frequented by Prince Harry and his cousin Beatrice exclusive night spot Mahiki. Interestingly, it turned out that the young man and his bride are actually distant relatives.

The couple met about 7 years ago in Switzerland and for some time did a long-distance relationship, while Princess Eugenie lived and worked in New York. By the way, both daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson pursue careers outside the royal family.

Periodically, details of the upcoming celebration come to light. The wedding ceremony will take place at St. George's Chapel (like Harry and Meghan’s one in May) and Eugenie’s older sister, Princess Beatrice, will be her maid of honor. The wedding bouquet composition will include myrtle, and as for the bride's dress, its design is traditionally kept a secret for now. What is known, is that the British brand (presumably, Erdem) is working on its creation.

Not all of Princess Eugenie’s relatives are expected to attend the ceremony. Prince Philip is likely to miss out on his granddaughter’s wedding due to tension between him and Sarah Ferguson.

Kate and Pippa Middleton are also likely to be absent. The wedding is scheduled for the period when the youngest of the sisters is expected to become a mother for the first time, and the elder is likely to be with her.

Recently, it has been estimated that the organization of the festive occasion as well as ensuring the safety of all its guests will cost about 750,000 pounds (a little less than 1 million dollars). These expenses are likely to be covered by the royal family. However, there is one more thing - professional protection of the 9th in line to the throne, which may amount to approximately $ 2.5 million of the taxpayers’ money.

This information caused a strong public response. In particular, the Labour Party has opposed the bill regulating this mechanism of payment for Princess Eugenie wedding protection. Labour MP Chris Williamson believes that 80% of the amount (2 million) should be paid by Prince Andrew. Given the government’s funding cuts on police numbers the politician finds his suggestion “perfectly adequate”. He also voiced an argument that royals could organize less lavish celebrations if they expect the public to chip in. Williamson went on to point out that Princess Eugenie carries no royal function and no useful purpose to the public sphere.  That is, the public ceremony is mostly her personal desire, rather than taxpayers’ obligation.

Every bride dreams to have a wedding like a princess. The difference is that ordinary people can’t expect the government to pay for it. Nevertheless, these are traditions and laws – a part of the royal family’s expenses is covered by the country's budget. What is your opinion, do Eugenie and Jack have the right to spend taxpayers’ money, despite having a less prominent social role than their more famous relatives?
