Queen Melancholy: Experts Explained Why Elizabeth II Almost Never Smiles To Her Husband

Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have lived together for more than 70. The spouses have shared quite an eventful journey so far - the birth of four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, painful divorces in the family, the death of the daughter-in-law and rumors that always surround the monarchs.

Sometimes, it seems that they are still together only because it is the right thing to do. The couple has almost never openly shown their affection. Moreover, in public Elizabeth even rarely treats her husband with a smile.

In their opinion, Prince Philip sincerely worships his queen - he is always armed and ready to help, although he keeps a few steps behind her. According to Wood, Elizabeth feels the need to prove her independence - she seldom leans on her husband and even shows some alienation.

It turns out that even such a strict and ceremonious couple are no strangers to public displays of love and tenderness, which was noted by body language expert Judi James. It is difficult not to notice a significant difference in their manner. Prince Philip, a former military man, always looks as if he is on the parade ground, while Elizabeth next to him looks like a county lady. However, they are like-minded people, as evidenced by strong mirroring.

According to James, the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh share a similar sense of humor - they laugh at the same things heartily, and their emotions often reveal that they are in synch with each other.

Finally, they always support each other emotionally. In many photos, Prince Philip leans toward his wife to establish eye contact, because even a queen could need a reliable shoulder at times. Then why do they look estranged so often?

Blanca Cobb believes that it is explained by their upbringing and belonging to a generation of people, who find public displays of attachment unacceptable. Perhaps, for this reason, in official portraits, it is so rare to notice the queen’s smile directed to her husband, even when they are surrounded by their children.

In these photos, Elizabeth II often looks at the camera or aside, but this does not imply that she was burdened by her husband or aloof. In fact, they are always comfortable with each other, even without their emotions and facial expressions being synchronized.

The experts’ opinions boil down to the fact that Prince Philip never hesitates to be attentive to the queen, and she, it would seem, is often focused on someone or something else. However, there is a strong emotional connection between the spouses, they are happy to be together.
