In the summer of 1997, Al-Fayed began to look after the Princess persistently. As a result, she accepted his invitation to spend the holidays in the south of France. Unfortunately, the holiday ended in tragedy. The only survivor in the car accident that occurred on August 31 of the same year was Dodi’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones. It was believed that the driver who was reportedly drunk had lost control of the car. He and his passengers weren’t fastened, and Rees-Jones was saved by an airbag.

The bodyguard was hospitalized in critical condition, spending 10 days in a coma. During this time, surgeons reconstructed his face with the help of approximately 150 titanium plates. When Rees-Jones recovered, it turned out that his head injury allowed him to recollect only a few details of the accident.

Trevor was born in 1968 and initially planned to build a military career. Rhee-Jones started working with Mohamed Al-Fayed, Dodi's father, in 1995, and two years later became Dodi’s bodyguard. By the way, it is believed that he allegedly denied rumors that Diana and Dodi had acquired wedding rings shortly before the tragedy.

Even during his stay in France, journalists interviewed him four times, but the man was unable to give any details on what had happened. After returning to the UK, he quit and recuperated after the accident for the sake of care for his mother and stepfather. In the book The Bodyguard's Story: Diana, the Crash, and the Sole Survivor, published in 2000, Trevor mentioned that Diana's weak voice was the most vivid memory: she asked Dodi, who died immediately after the crash, for help. However, Rees-Jones wasn’t sure what was happening. He spent most of the reward on legal costs: Dodi's father, although he paid for the bodyguard’s treatment, accused him for his son’s death. Rees-Jones was eventually justified.

After recovering physically, he married for the second time, worked in Iraq, played rugby, and opened a small business to provide advice on security issues. He likely also thought about what would have happened if he hadn’t let Diana get into a car with a drunk driver. Now, his fate is the only living reminder of the death of the "People's Princess." Do you think there is a chance that once he will tell more details? Share your thoughts in the comments.
