John and Jackie Kennedy are one of the most discussed American couples, even though both have already passed away, and their wedding took place 65 years ago. A young politician made a brilliant career, married a timeless style icon, and was one of the most popular US presidents. However, every year we find out new details about their relationship. Moreover, they aren’t very pleasant. Jackie was unhappy in her personal life, and there must be a certain reason she was so angry with her sister.

He looked like an exemplary family man – a caring husband and a loving father. She knew about his numerous extramarital affairs but still kept silent. In his biographical book, Jackie, Janet & Lee, Randy Taraborelli wrote that Jacqueline wanted to file for divorce several times because of her husband’s never-ending cheating. First, it happened in 1956, after the birth of their stillborn daughter, Arabella. Jackie’s mother persuaded her not to break up the relationship because she believed that Jackie had to pay a certain price for marrying such a powerful person.

Jacqueline wanted to file for divorce for the second time during John’s presidential campaign. This time, the father of the future head of state offered Jackie a large sum of money for silence and preserving his son’s reputation. However, John kept on cheating, and many believed that one of his mistresses was Jackie’s sister, Caroline (Lee) Radziwill.

She has been married three times. First, young Lee married the son of a major publisher, later divorced him, and married Polish Prince Stanislaw Radziwill. The couple soon welcomed two children, despite a 19-year-old age difference. The third time, Caroline accepted the proposal in 1988 from an American director, with whom she parted shortly before his death in 2001.

The sisters’ relationships were clearly described in the biographical book by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters: The Tragic and Glamorous Lives of Jackie and Lee. Jacqueline and Caroline often appeared in society accompanied by their husbands and children, creating the illusion of a large and friendly family. The authors also wrote that Lee, still in her first marriage with Michael Canfield, accepted John’s intimate offers several times, and even boasted of her “success.” Finally, the information about the president’s relationship with his wife’s sister was made public by writer Gore Vidal. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2012, so it is no longer possible to verify these claims.

However, the sisters’ relationships were only getting worse since that time, and the reason for this was the conflict over another man. When Lee was still married to the Prince, she met a Greek tycoon, Aristotle Onassis. Caroline fell in love with the handsome man and even thought about breaking up with Stanislaw.

However, life is unpredictable, and you never know what can happen next. After the chain of sorrowful events in the Kennedys' life (the death of younger son Patrick and subsequent assassination of John Kennedy), Lee invited her sister on a trip and introduced her to Onassis. Their friendship had soon transformed into a romantic affair, and the couple got married, even though Caroline confessed Onassis was her only true love.

Another interesting fact: Jackie was quite a wealthy woman, but she didn’t leave her sister a penny. It was rumored that she explained her decision by not wanting to financially support her ex-husband’s mistress.

Jackie died in 1994 without saying goodbye to her sister. 85-year-old Lee lives in New York now. She is involved in charity and leads an active social life. Do you think that Jacqueline was too rough with Caroline? What would you do in her place? Share your opinion in the comments.
