"Inconceivable" Occasion: A Woman Who Lost Hope Of Becoming A Mother Soon Welcomed Quadruplets

Date November 9, 2018

Many women diagnosed with endometriosis associate this disease with a high risk of infertility and ovarian cancer. Nevertheless, not all cases are hopeless, as evidenced by the exciting story of Ashley and Tyson Gardner.

The couple had been struggling with the woman’s disease for 8 years, trying to become parents in vain. Having saved enough money, the spouses decided to make a last attempt and turn to in vitro fertilization (IVF). The costly procedure offered no guarantees, but the Gardners didn’t want to miss the chance. During the month before IVF, Ashley took a number of drugs to increase fertility and reduce pain, was constantly observed by a doctor, and after embryo implantation conducted a planned ultrasound scan. Since then, her life changed dramatically.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition when the tissues, normally developing inside the uterus, begin to grow beyond its borders, not being able to leave a woman’s body during menstruation. This leads to the formation of cysts in the ovaries, the appearance of scars and adhesions in the small pelvis, severe pain due to the connection of the pelvic organs with fibrous tissues and a decrease in the ability to conceive.

Signs of endometriosis that shouldn’t be ignored

  • menstruation pain, accompanied by fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, abdominal distension, and nausea;
  • discomfort during intimacy, during stool and urination;
  • difficult menstruation or its absence during a long period.

Causes of the disease

  • retrograde menstruation, during which endometrial particles fall back into the fallopian tubes;
  • hormonal dysfunctions;
  • immune disorders;
  • “germination” of endometrial tissues into postoperative scars and the transfer of their cells along with lymph to other organs and tissues of the body.

When Ashley completed the course of preparation for IVF, the doctors managed to fertilize 16 of her eggs, but only two embryos were viable. This meant the couple could have twins, no more.

Other indication for IVF apart from endometriosis

  • low quality and viability of sperm;
  • insufficient patency of the fallopian tubes;
  • problems with ovulation;
  • atypical activity of antibodies that perceive eggs or sperm as a threat.

Recent studies have shown that the effectiveness of IVF is quite high, although it decreases with the age of a woman and is:

  • up to 35 years: 41-43%;
  • 35-37 years; 33-36%;
  • 38-40 years: 23-27%;
  • after 40 years: 13-18%.

The heroes of our story went through a long week that followed the implantation of two healthy embryos before tests confirmed pregnancy. However, the biggest surprise was awaiting Ashley and Tyler during a scheduled scan on the 7th week of the term. The ultrasound showed that 4 fetuses developed in the woman’s body at once: each of the embryos at an early stage had divided into two sets of identical twin girls, the likelihood of which was very small.

Ashley and Tyler couldn’t have ever dreamed of becoming a large family at once, especially since their case could easily have turned out to be unsuccessful. After 8 years of failed attempts to become parents, they succeeded in this, and their history is a proof that you shouldn’t give up one's family goals, no matter how unattainable they might seem. Share this miraculous story with your friends to inspire them to reach for the "impossible."
