The number of later-in-life divorces is growing worldwide. In the United States, or instance, half a century ago, only 2.8% of Americans over 50 were divorced. In 2011, 15.4% were divorced and 2.1% lived separately.

There is even a term in the US for divorces after 50 – Americans call them “gray divorces."

Why do so many older people divorce instead of enjoying graceful age together?

Reasons for “gray divorce”

There are several reasons why people over 50 decide to separate. Here are the most common ones:

  1. Financial independence. Women no longer depend on their husbands in this respect.
  2. The attitude towards divorce has changed in society. It is no longer considered shameful.
  3. Incompatibility in bed. The intimacy aspect of marriage has grown in importance in the last few decades.
  4. Loss of common interests. People change with age, and this is a fact!
  5. Increased life expectancy. Who wants to live in an unhappy marriage for several more decades?

Naturally, there must be good reasons to take this radical step. Experts warn that divorce has serious consequences for the elderly. Like widowhood, it can be detrimental to health and aggravate economic problems.
