Parents take it very hard when something’s wrong with their child. Especially if it’s a serious mental illness that they didn’t even suspect. So, it is important to pay close attention to the child to notice deviations in behavior and turn to specialists in time.

Autism, depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are among the most common ones. They may be caused by various reasons, but in most cases are as a result of:

  • genetic predisposition;
  • a traumatic stressful situation;
  • family breakdown;
  • biological factors: difficult course of pregnancy and childbirth, low body mass at birth, poor sleep, teenage pregnancy.

What should parents pay attention to? What behavior is a reason to be concerned? Let's look at some disorders.

1. Autism

A child may be aggressive for no apparent reason. The main sign is not responding when called by name or not reacting to speech at all. A change in normal procedure (ritual) or rearranging objects in the room leads to a tantrum.

The child refuses to perform tasks or requests. Some things he or she does may be inappropriate or indecent by the standards of society, like undressing in public, for example.

2. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

It is difficult for such children to concentrate; they are often very active and impulsive. Preschoolers have problems with discipline and have no interest in finishing things. ADHD is 3 times more common among boys than girls.

3. Heightened anxiety

A fear of various situations, like getting lost on the street or getting sick, makes such children always want to be near adults. They can't play alone and don’t want to go to school. They have constant nightmares about separation.

Such psychological consequences as dyslexia (difficulty reading, but no aptitude or understanding problems) and eating disorders (teenagers are unhappy with their weight or appearance) are also worth mentioning.

Dear parents, be attentive to your children’s behavior; diseases can manifest themselves at even an early age. Be sure to consult with experts if you feel something’s not right.
