Motherhood is a real test for a woman. Every newly-made mother has heard how hard it is to get used to a new life after giving birth. At the same time, more experienced people remember this stage as the greatest bliss of their lives. However, even those who loved their kids with all their heart were afraid to admit that, at times, they felt miserable. And it is only recently that mothers started to come forward saying that they regret having children.

In April 2019, the popular parents’ forum Mumsnet was divided by a post of a woman. She confessed that she loved her younger son more, and that made her feel really guilty toward the elder one. She spent plenty of time with her firstborn, carefully tried to hide her feelings, and often came up with fun activities only for the two of them. But at the same time, she understood that she was trying to force a bond that wasn’t there.

The users started sharing their opinions on this matter. And some were rather categorical in their claims.

@moita:

My son is very hard work but we have an incredible bond. He is very like me in personality in some ways and has traits I wish I had (bags of confidence). I had a dream birth with him and really did fall instantly in love with him.

@motherofdxughters:

My favourite changes depending on the day. They're both so incredibly different right now and I'm talking polar opposites in everything except general behaviour which is good.

@colehawlins:

You should probably seek therapeutic input now rather than wait until the patterns are set.

@TeddyIsaHe:

I will say that no matter how hard you try to hide it your children will know as they get older. I certainly did with my parents and it left me with a massive resentment towards them. Seeking help now would benefit both your children.

@crimsonlake:

I have 2 children and they are both my favourites.

When there are two or more children in a family, parents convince them that they love them equally. Yet, a recent study showed a different picture: about 74% of women and about 70% of men admitted that they had a favorite child. In some cases, it was the firstborn because of the unforgettable experience he or she had been for the parents.

In other cases, it was the youngest child for whom the parents had more free time, attention, and better financial opportunities, etc. But no matter how parents treated them, conflicts between siblings arose on the basis of who was the favorite regardless of the order of birth.

Parents don’t pick favorites intentionally. They can really love their children equally, but still, they can closer with a child they have more in common with (appearance, character or interests).

Most likely, the fact is that adults express their love for them in a different manner. If you understand what each child needs (praise, discipline, attention, approval, quality time) and give it to them, everyone will feel loved.

Every child is different, and each requires a special approach. Another way to prevent jealousy between siblings is to look at how they express feelings themselves. Often, this is a projection of how they would like to be treated.

Do parents have favorites – is one of the main questions that children ask. What do you think, is this phenomenon normal or does it have to be corrected with appropriate therapy?
