All couples are beautiful in their own way, although there are instances of an attractive man or woman having a partner with a much less prominent appearance. Nevertheless, they love each other and are happy.

At the same time, some couples look like superstars from glossy covers. You may ask what else they need for happiness if they love and support each other. Scientists have their own opinions on this.

In 2017, specialists at Harvard University shared interesting observations. Although attractive people are more prone to being noticed and getting promotions easier in comparison to less beautiful colleagues, they aren’t always happy in love.

In a series of four studies, Christine Ma‐Kellams and her colleagues found that men with outstanding appearance were more likely to break up with their partners. At one stage of the research, celebrities’ relations were analyzed. It was found that the physical attractiveness of famous men was also one of the factors that led to their early separation. It was all explained that more beautiful men and women tend to devalue their partners’ appearance in comparison to potentially new lovers. Finally, the scientists concluded that in couples where both partners were attractive, one of the spouses began to feel less or more worthy, criticizing the appearance of the other.

As you know, envy and dissatisfaction are the main enemies of passion, and are potential harbingers of a toxic relationship. Constant dissatisfaction with the partner’s behavior or appearance causes jealousy, followed by insults and showdowns. Even strong marriages can hardly endure such a test.

Concerns about the appearance and image also affect self-esteem, especially females'. At the same time, one spouse may be inclined to objectify the second, focusing on the physical instead of personal qualities. This often leads to the creation of a block in the relationship. People begin to compare partners to others and find nonexistent weaknesses.

Many women are constantly dissatisfied with themselves because they are trying to meet the imposed standards of beauty. Men see the condition of their wives and gradually begin to believe that they deserve better.

No wonder they say that a happy family is the one where a woman feels calm. But few people think that a man can give her the necessary sense of confidence. Some skeptical women can ask their partners over and over again what they look like and immediately reject compliments: they aren’t thrilled when they are “reassured.” But if a man loves his spouse the way she is and shows it, the point of such words simply disappears.

After discarding all stereotypes, we can conclude that a couple’s happiness depends on the level of trust and support in the relationship. We love our partners not for the fact that at specific periods of life they are slim or pumped up. And if any of them pay attention only to the appearance, is it worth it to continue such a relationship?
