Each country has its unique history, culture, and sights. Also, there are some local features that may surprise or bewilder a tourist. In Tokyo, for example, you can see baby crying contests, and tame a real varan monitor lizard in Bangkok.

Tourists are usually very observant people. Sometimes, their inquisitive eyes notice quite extraordinary things. One of them is quite a common sight on the streets of Spain. In 2018, one of the users of popular resource Reddit shared an amusing photo. The street was lined with water-filled bottles at each entrance or driveway, the purpose of which seemed completely unfathomable at first glance.

However, as it turned out, it was quite practical. Homeless animals in Spain are unfortunately as numerous as in many other countries of the world. In particular, the Spaniards were bothered by stray cats: the troublemakers used to relieve themselves right at the entrances and corners.

The bottles happened to be an effective way to deal with such unsuitable conduct. According to one version, cats never “contaminate” clean water. The others believe that they simply don’t like to approach the bottles, because they are either afraid of their own reflection, or the reflection of light from the surface of the water supposedly disorients them, especially at night.

A rather unusual way to solve the problem of cleanliness of the street, isn’t it? The Spaniards aren’t the only ones to use this lifehack. You can see an abundance of such bottles in Japan, some other Asian countries, Italy, and even Hawaii. But there is an even more incredible use for them.

In Brazil, for example, there used to be a myth that if you put a bottle of water directly on an electric meter, it will save money. Incredible, right?

The Brazilians probably didn’t believe in this strange myth too much themselves. But what do you think about scaring street cats with water-filled bottles? How effective can it be?
