Now, we suggest you look for a pencil and paper, concentrate, and try to deal with the following equations. Can you finish the task and explain how you coped with it? David knows two answers.

Don’t give up too quickly if you can’t deal with the task immediately. Think hard and analyze everything.

Have you managed to complete it? The most important thing in both solutions is to find a pattern that repeats on each line of the task. Now, check your solution with the two possible answers.

### Solution 1:

If we add the result of the previous equation to each subsequent one, we can build a chain in the following way:

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 5 (and the previous + 5) = 12

3 + 6 (and the previous +12) = 21

8 + 11 (and the previous +21) = 40

**The correct answer is 40.**

### Solution 2:

Considering the answers to the presented equations, we can assume that it is all about multiplication. So, the second solution can be represented as the result of the multiplied numbers in the original equation. It looks like this:

1 + (1 x 4) = 1 + 4 = 5

2 + (2 x 5) = 2 + 10 = 12

3 + (3 x 6) = 3 + 18 = 21

8 + (8 x 11) = 8 + 88 = 96

**The correct answer is 96.**

1. Numbers **1, 2, and 3** (1 + 2 + 3 = 6, and 1 x 2 x 3 = 6)

2. Your phone number must have "0" as one of the digits, so when you multiply the entire number, it will always be zero.

3. Each subsequent number describes (names the number and their amount) the previous one:

- “1” is the starting one.
- The next “11” describes that there is “a single (1) one (1)” in the previous number.
- “21” means there are “two (2) ones (1) in the previous number.”
- After that, “1211” describes that there is “a single (1) two (2) and a single (1) one (1)” in the previous number.
- This is the pattern. So, the correct answer will eventually be “
**13112221**,” meaning “a single (1) three (3), a single (1) one (1), two (2) twos (2), and two (2) ones (1).”
