# Are You A Whizz At Math Puzzles? Let's Check Your Logic And Critical Thinking April 5, 2019

Logic puzzles, as well as mathematical problems, have always attracted intellectuals’ attention. They find it interesting to look for possible solutions because sometimes there may be several. And everyone can prove their correctness! Rawpixel.com / Shutterstock.com

## Entertaining mathematics

The mathematical problem invented by David Wolfe has already gathered almost 7 million views, with more than 40,000 comments from people across globe. That is because it doesn’t have a single answer! Now, we suggest you look for a pencil and paper, concentrate, and try to deal with the following equations. Can you finish the task and explain how you coped with it? David knows two answers.

Don’t give up too quickly if you can’t deal with the task immediately. Think hard and analyze everything.

Have you managed to complete it? The most important thing in both solutions is to find a pattern that repeats on each line of the task. Now, check your solution with the two possible answers.

### Solution 1:

If we add the result of the previous equation to each subsequent one, we can build a chain in the following way:

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 5 (and the previous + 5) = 12

3 + 6 (and the previous +12) = 21

8 + 11 (and the previous +21) = 40

The correct answer is 40.

### Solution 2:

Considering the answers to the presented equations, we can assume that it is all about multiplication. So, the second solution can be represented as the result of the multiplied numbers in the original equation. It looks like this:

1 + (1 x 4) = 1 + 4 = 5

2 + (2 x 5) = 2 + 10 = 12

3 + (3 x 6) = 3 + 18 = 21

8 + (8 x 11) = 8 + 88 = 96

The correct answer is 96.

Do you have a similar answer?

## Additional tasks for the most intelligent

If you are so smart and find it easy to solve complex logical puzzles, we will offer you a few more. Don’t cheat by trying to find the answers beforehand. Radachynskyi Serhii / Shutterstock.com

1. What are the three positive numbers that give the same result if you add or multiply them?

2. What will you get if you multiply the numbers from your phone number?

3. What will the next number in this chain be? 1 – 11 – 21 – 1211 – 111221 – 312211 – ? Antonio Guillem / Shutterstock.com

## Answers

1. Numbers 1, 2, and 3 (1 + 2 + 3 = 6, and 1 x 2 x 3 = 6)

2. Your phone number must have "0" as one of the digits, so when you multiply the entire number, it will always be zero.

3. Each subsequent number describes (names the number and their amount) the previous one:

• “1” is the starting one.
• The next “11” describes that there is “a single (1) one (1)” in the previous number.
• “21” means there are “two (2) ones (1) in the previous number.”
• After that, “1211” describes that there is “a single (1) two (2) and a single (1) one (1)” in the previous number.
• This is the pattern. So, the correct answer will eventually be “13112221,” meaning “a single (1) three (3), a single (1) one (1), two (2) twos (2), and two (2) ones (1).”

Did you manage to cope with these tasks as well! Excellent! If you know any other similar puzzles, share them with everyone in the comments!
