"Pregnant At 48 (Freaked Out). Anyone Else Around This Age?"

Date May 23, 2019

Pregnancy is always tightly linked to lots of worries for the future mom. Life circumstances of different women vary and they don't always manage to get pregnant in the period between 20 to 30 years which is usually considered a norm (career, work, career growth, a little traveling and earning a living again!). Some get diagnosed with infertility. In any case, getting pregnant after 35 years old involves certain risks.

The risks are high indeed, but isn't there some truth to what the person below said in the comments?

One of the most popular comments to the post stated almost the same thing: women always gave birth over 40.

The number of women who got pregnant after 40, whatever their life circumstances were, has significantly risen in the last 50 years. There's good news: if you lead a healthy lifestyle, you're not overweight and you exercise regularly, then you have a lower risk of a miscarriage than a 30-year-old woman. It is natural that women after 40 have a higher risk of preeclampsia (increased blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy), gestational diabetes as well as the risk of breast cancer in women after 50.

Many women are afraid of keeping the fetus due to the risk of having a physically or mentally impaired baby. They should be as the chance of giving birth to a healthy baby are still high at 35, 40 and even 45. You should just follow a healthy diet and exercise according to your gynecologist's recommendations, go for regular check-ups and follow pre-birth hygiene rules.

What are the chances of getting pregnant at 35, 40, 45+?

Women's fertility decreases significantly after 40 years old due to reduced production and the number of viable eggs and less frequent ovulation. Men's ability to conceive a baby also decreases, so if you want to get pregnant, but you fail to do so for a year, you need to consult a doctor to find out what you need to do next.

The chances of getting pregnant

  • at 30 years old - 75%
  • at 40 years old - 40-50%
  • at 43 years old - chances drop to 1-2%.

Ways of having a baby after 40

  • IVF (In vitro fertilization or just fertilization)
  • donor organs (ovaries)
  • surrogacy

In mature age, a woman usually doesn't have any illusions concerning kids and motherhood anymore and is mentally and psychologically ready to raise a baby. She chooses healthier food, breastfeeds the baby, which will allow it to get all the necessary antibodies for fighting illnesses so you shouldn't take a side in this matter, "for" or "against". If you know that it's your last chance, go for it.
