Dry eye syndrome (DES), or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is an eye disease caused by decreased production of tears or their rapid evaporation. This is one of the most common diseases affecting 5-6% of the population and is even found in some animals.

What causes it?

Tears are a natural lubricant that are designed to provide comfort for our eyes, keep them healthy, and remove dust and other foreign particles.

The feeling of dryness indicates a failure in the tear system. Other causes of DES include:

  • natural age-related processes (in particular, menopause);
  • diseases that affect the ability to produce tears, such as rheumatoid arthritis or Sjögren's syndrome;
  • side effects of certain drugs, such as antihistamines;
  • problems that don’t allow your eyelids to close properly.

How to get rid of DES and when is it time to see the doctor?

There are several things you can do to treat this syndrome:

  • buy an air-humidifier (dry air exacerbates the problem);
  • apply artificial tears (it is recommended to consult a doctor beforehand);
  • get circulatory laser stimulation of the tear glands;
  • treat diseases that lead to dry eye syndrome;
  • take regular breaks when working at the computer.

If dry eyes prevent you from performing everyday tasks and cause severe discomfort, don’t delay a trip to the doctor. An eye doctor may refer you to another specialist who will prescribe treatment for the cause of your DES.
