Excess Hair On Different Parts Of A Woman's Body: What Does It Mean?

Date March 7, 2019

When women dream of thick, healthy hair, they're thinking only about the hair on the head. Its appearance on other parts of the body may be hereditary or indicate some diseases. Excessive male-pattern growth of terminal (strong, mature) hair in women has a definite term – hirsutism.

Unwanted body hair

All women have hair growing on their bodies, but it is usually light, thin, and soft. With hirsutism, unwanted hair is tough and can grow in unusual places: above the upper lip, on the chin, chest, abdomen, and back. In these zones, it is usually seen in men.

If your hair grows in places where it shouldn’t, it is most often associated with hormonal imbalances. This leads to an excess of male hormones in the body. The most common one is testosterone. Sometimes, it is associated with premenopause and menopause, when hormone levels rise.

Among other reasons for excessive growth of unwanted hair are the following:

  • genetic predisposition;
  • side effects of certain drug types;
  • congenital adrenal hyperplasia;
  • excess weight;
  • polycystic ovary syndrome.

If you are worried about this dark and tough body hair for aesthetic reasons or feel less confident, you should contact an endocrinologist to establish the cause before starting to deal with it. Only after that, you should think about what ways to get rid of the excess hair. This may be shaving or wax depilation, special creams for hair removal, or electrolysis.
