What's Wrong With This List? The Woman Sent Her Husband To The Store As Punishment

Date April 4, 2019 14:44

The division of domestic responsibilities between partners always has several points of view. In some couples, spouses divide work into male and female types. Some act according to circumstances and aren’t tied to gender stereotypes. Others have only one of the partners carrying out all the duties, and unfortunately, the main burden is often left to the women.

Several studies have even supported them. According to one, dads rest more on weekends, while mothers work around the house and take care of children. According to another, single women tend to be healthier and happier than those married into old age.

An unexpected solution to the problem of “the lazy husband” was shared by popular blogger Karen Alpert. Tired of her husband’s resting while she was slaving away, the woman sent him to the store. However, the list of products was a bit different from the ordinary. It included some non-existent products!

Karen made the task even more complicated: she turned off her phone. More than 57,000 people shared her post! Apart from that, the post was commented on about 19,000 times! Opinions differed.

@Denis Miller:

Oh, he’s been lying on the couch? Did he work all week to provide you and the family with your current situation and comfort? If yes, and you 'worked' at home, he deserves it.

@Todd Sicilia:

And that’s when the fight began.

@Carla Badawi:

Lol, this hilarious 😂

@Anjilique Nicholson:

My husband comes back with all of these items every time.... none of which are sold in Canada or were on the list... I don’t know how he manages to find them EVERYTIME

@Johnny Vinegar:

Hopefully, he found a decent woman while he was out.

Brigid Schulte has also shared her experience with The Guardian. For a long time, she was in conflict with her husband about the division of responsibilities, gradually taking upon herself everything that, in her opinion, she did better. Eventually, she did almost all the housework, hoping that it would be appreciated. Only after several years of married life, Brigid and her husband Tom began to discuss their differences and offenses that they had been having during their relationship.

Luckily, they soon redesigned their routine, started working together with the children, planned their leisure time, and continued to talk about other improvements.

So, what can we conclude about distributing the duties around a house effectively?

  1. Don’t divide the work only by male and female types. Just think who does certain things better.
  2. Take care of the children together. You all need rest, while a kid needs the attention of both spouses.
  3. Don’t try to share domestic chores 50/50: it's silly to both cook half a dinner or wash only “your part” of the dishes.
  4. Everyone needs a break for at least a few hours a week.
  5. Finally, don’t live according to a routine that doesn’t suit your family – create your own.

It makes no sense to be mad at someone, trying to make your work visible and meaningful, if it can be divided and planned. Be sincere and do everything you can to enjoy your life. What about you? How do you cope with this task? Share your experience in the comments.
