Thyroid Diseases Are Often Overlooked In The Early Stages. Here Are Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Date November 15, 2018

Many of us tend to postpone and skip medical check-ups or ignore some disturbing signs until it is too late. In the early stages, a number of diseases are asymptomatic. It happened to a young actress, Lorna Brown: at 26 she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It turned out that one symptom was clearly visible almost all the time.

Functions of the thyroid gland

Iodine-containing hormones T4 and T3 (thyroxine and triiodothyronine, respectively) regulate metabolism, organ development, production, and accumulation of energy, which directly affect the physical endurance of a person. Calcitonin controls calcium metabolism and contributes to the proper development and functioning of the skeleton. An important role in ensuring the proper functioning of the thyroid gland is also played by thyrotropin or thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), synthesized in the pituitary gland in the brain.

When the state of health is good or satisfactory, the fluctuations of each indicator are insignificant. They may change with age, depending on gender and lifestyle, among others.

Disorders in the thyroid gland

Deviations may indicate systemic disorders in the thyroid gland. However, there are a number of serious diseases that are asymptomatic and do not show up on tests. These include thyroiditis, euthyroidism, and benign and malignant neoplasms, including those with metastases.

When Brown was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, she didn’t believe it because she felt absolutely fine. The only sign of the disease was a small lump-like formation under the skin on her throat – it was visible on almost all the girl’s selfies.

The examination confirmed the presence of a nodule on the surface of the thyroid gland, which turned out to be malignant. The problem was detected at an early stage and, thanks to the successful removal of a part of the affected gland, Lorna doesn’t need to take hormone replacement medication for the rest of her life.

She shared her story on social networks, hoping to raise awareness about this condition.

A number of factors affect the function of the thyroid. If you reside in an area with high radiation history and in areas where iodine deficiency is observed, you should get examined on a regular basis. A test doesn’t always detect a disorder, but an experienced supervising physician may insist on additional tests to determine the causes of worrying signs and symptoms to take appropriate and timely measures.
