44-year-old Charlotte Wittman ignored one alarming symptom that she didn’t even associate with cancer. At nights, the woman’s left breast would get itchy. Charlotte blamed it on a local allergic reaction to a laundry detergent. But when Wittman went to the doctor, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer!

There are two types of breast cancer that can develop in both women and men. Noninvasive cancer occurs as a result of the uncontrolled division of mutated cells in the breast ducts or glands and doesn’t spread to other parts of the body. Invasive tumors spread outside the lesion.

Common symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored:

  • chest pain;
  • changes in the shape or size of the breast;
  • changes in the skin condition (reddening, scaling, or the chest skin may become pitted and thick like an orange peel);
  • bloody discharge;
  • an inverted nipple;
  • a local increase in temperature;
  • wrinkled skin, dents, and bulges appear while raising the arms;
  • darkening or, on the contrary, lightening of the areola;
  • a rash around the nipple;
  • tissue thickening or a lump on the mammary gland or adjacent areas, especially, the armpit.

The heroine of our history had none of these symptoms. In her case, a warning sign was local irritation and painful sensations caused by scratching the chest. The atypical manifestations of cancer can also include pain localized in the chest and upper thoracic spine not related to physical exertions, overstrain, chronic illnesses; as well as weight loss.

Here are a few simple tips, recommended for prevention of breast cancer.

  1. Maintain a healthy body weight through a nutritional diet and regular exercise.
  2. Periodically check the condition of your mammary glands on your own, and also don’t skip regular doctor’s appointments.
  3. Limit alcohol consumption.
  4. Be careful with hormonal drugs and consult with an observant physician if you feel any changes in your well-being.
