Every woman who cares about her beauty and health knows that there is a list of beauty routines to do regularly, including manicures, pedicures, face masks, massage, and other treatments. They are generally pleasant and quite enjoyable, but sometimes there are problems that need to be addressed. One of the most common ones is dry, cracked heels.

Causes

  1. Lack of moisture.
  2. Lack of vitamins.
  3. Pressure (standing for a long time at work or at home).
  4. Aging skin.
  5. Obesity (more weight increases pressure on the heels).
  6. Open shoes (heels can crack on the sides because it doesn’t receive the necessary support there).
  7. Lack of necessary hygiene.
  8. Genes.
  9. Long exposure to water (for example, after a trip to the sea, heels appear dry and may crack).
  10. Various diseases (for example, psoriasis, dermatitis).

Complications

In severe cases, you may develop complications due to cracked heels, especially if this condition is caused by a disease. These may include:

  • a loss of feeling in the heel;
  • an infection;
  • diabetic foot ulcer;
  • redness and/or swelling;
  • severe heel pain.

Note: Don’t treat cracked heels yourself in cases where it is caused by a medical condition.

Again, this can be done only if the problem is not caused by a disease, but, for example, because of shoes, long exposure to water, or a lack of moisture. In this case, consider the following remedies:

1. Foot peel

Try soft chemical peels for cracked heels. These products are readily available in stores and pharmacies.

2. Petroleum jelly

Go to bed at night with 100% cotton socks on, after applying petroleum jelly on the heels.

3. Liquid bandage

Liquid bandages are a good option for treating deep cracks on heels that can bleed.

4. Honey

Apply honey as a foot mask for 30 minutes, then rinse and apply a moisturizer to the skin.

Note: Before using any of these tips, make sure that you don’t have any individual intolerance (allergic reaction) to these components.

Now you know possible causes of heel cracks, when to see a doctor, and how to cope with this problem at home unless it is caused by a serious illness. Be attentive to your health!
