Health Alert: Breast Implants Are A Reason For This Rare Type Of Cancer That Doesn’t Affect The Mammary Glands

Breast implants are very popular nowadays. Some women use them to adjust the shape and size of their bust and meet certain beauty standards, while others resort to them as part of reconstructive surgery. At the same time, the modern technologies and materials from which they are made are considered relatively harmless. However, sometimes implants do cause unexpected diseases.

Specialists from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration suggested there is a link between breast implants and the risk of developing a rare form of cancer – anaplastic large cell lymphoma that affects the blood and immune system.

The reasons and the risk factors haven’t been reliably studied yet. However, in about half of the registered cases, this form of cancer was diagnosed 7 to 8 years after plastic surgery. At the same time, it was formerly believed this disease affects young people, in most cases, males.

46-year-old Michelle Forney was diagnosed with this rare form of immune system cancer after she had implants for 19 years.

The woman resorted to doctors because of breast itching, pain, and swelling. Initially, experts suggested mastitis, but antibiotic treatment didn’t give the expected results. This type of cancer is particularly dangerous, since it can’t be detected by mammography, and the symptoms can be easily confused with a number of other diseases.

Michelle's implants were textured (they had a rough surface that prevented their displacement), which she even didn’t know about. Presumably, this was one of the reasons for the disease development.

Symptoms:

  • fever;
  • excessive sweating at night;
  • loss of appetite and weight;
  • swollen lymph nodes in the armpits, neck or genitals;
  • chronic fatigue.

In Michelle’s case, anaplastic lymphoma was similar to mastitis, causing an incorrect diagnosis.

Not always and not all implants lead to cancer development, but their use do carry certain future risks, including:

  • possible loss of sensation and discomfort;
  • inability to return the breasts to their original shape after implants’ removal;
  • need for repeated operations to replace them over time or because of a rupture;
  • surgical complications (puffiness, infections, bleeding).

However, this is not all. The Mirror publication previously reported the death of a mother-of-three 17 days after breast augmentation surgery from a pulmonary embolism. This condition is characterized by blood clot formation, the risk of which increases after surgery, blocking one or more arteries in the lungs.

People have always strived to improve not only spiritually, but also physically, choosing different methods for this. However, true beauty doesn’t warrant measures that can potentially be dangerous to health and even life.
